Brendan Weinstein, the famous wingsuit athlete, died after hitting rocks at 193 km/h during an illegal jump at Table Mountain, Cape Town, South Africa.

The 32-year-old American star was an experienced athlete in the sport. Throughout his career, he completed more than 1,600 wingsuit flights, 800 BASE jumps, and 1,000 parachute jumps.

He had traveled alone to Cape Town to attempt the feat. According to Mail Online, he took a cable car to the top of the mountain and hiked for about 15 minutes before jumping from a height of 1,086 meters around 9 a.m. on the previous Monday (5).

Tourists who were hiking on the mountain witnessed the moment when Weinstein collided with the rocks at a speed of 193 km/h, about 10 seconds after jumping. The Wilderness Search & Rescue service and SanParks rangers were immediately alerted.

They sent rescue teams by helicopter to try to locate Weinstein’s body. He was found around 10 a.m. and airlifted to an ambulance stationed on a highway below.

He was found dead. His face had such severe injuries that DNA tests were needed to identify him. Weinstein leaves behind his wife, Kivia Martins, and his son, Eiger.

It is important to emphasize that jumping from Table Mountain is illegal. “[Jumping] from Table Mountain… poses a huge danger not only to the person jumping but also to the hundreds of people hiking the trails below,” said a spokesperson from Wilderness Search & Rescue.
